Bacteria as medicine
Discovered by Goback Lactic acid bacteria GG, one of the most thoroughly studied probiotics. Studies have shown that rates of many types of diarrhea, especially those that occur after antibiotics, are significantly reduced. Medications often clear out all the good and bad bacteria in their path, altering the natural balance of the gastrointestinal tract.
Lactic acid bacteria GG is one of the few probiotic bacterial strains available over the counter in capsule form. It may soon be possible to add it to yogurt.
Don't rely on yogurt
Raw or unpasteurized yogurt, Miss Muffet's curd, is loaded with bacteria. However, most commercial yogurt is pasteurized, a process that kills bacteria. A few researchers have found promise in pasteurized yogurt with live bacteria, but most research has focused on capsules containing specific bacterial strains. „The general consensus is that probiotics must be able to colonize the intestinal tract to have an impact on human health,“ Goback says. “This requirement disqualifies many of the strains currently used in fermented dairy products.”
Advocates say there's no harm in trying probiotics if you have diarrhea, are about to take antibiotics, or are planning a trip to a developing country. “I have no hesitation at all,” Gobach said. „There's no downside.“ But to avoid damage to your wallet, choose supplements that contain bacteria that have been shown to have positive results. In addition to Lactic acid bacteria GGthese include: Lactobacillus johnsonii, L. reuteriand Bifidobacterium.
