Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi was appointed to the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 1 July 1985. He was a communications and electronic warfare expert with a long and distinguished career spanning nearly 39 years.
Prior to becoming Vice Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Flagship Commander, Naval Command Western.
VAdm Tripathi commanded Indian Navy ships Vinash, Kirch and Trishul. He also held various key operational and staff appointments, including Chief of Fleet Operations, Western Fleet, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director of Network-Centric Operations, and Principal Director of Naval Programs, New Delhi.
