Northern Virginia data center developer asks power company Dominion Energy Co., Ltd. This is the latest sign of how artificial intelligence is contributing to increased electricity demand.
Dominion regularly fills requests from developers who need „multiple gigawatts“ of power for their planned data center campuses, CEO Bob Blue said Thursday in the company's first-quarter results. He said this at a press conference. A gigawatt is roughly equivalent to the power of a nuclear reactor and can power 750,000 homes.
Utilities are facing the biggest surge in demand in a generation. In addition to data centers running AI computing, America's power grid is being strained by new factories and the electrification of everything from cars to home heating.
