Actress Vanessa Morgan is speaking out about her 2020 divorce from baseball star Michael Kopech, nearly four years after their split.
The Riverdale actress recently sat down with Rachel Bilson for a new episode of her podcast, Broad Ideas, and discussed the divorce that occurred while she was pregnant with their son, River.
„In the moment, it’s so painful,“ Morgan reflected. „It’s almost like we idolize what our dream reality [was] from when we were a kid…[then] you mourn the future that never happened. You mourn the fantasy that you created, and that wasn’t the reality that was the best alignment for me.“
News of Kopech filing for divorce broke in July 2020, just days after Morgan announced she was expecting her first child, a baby boy.
Morgan made no mention of Kopech in her pregnancy announcement, despite him taking time off from playing for the White Sox due to personal reasons.
Morgan and Kopech got engaged in July 2019, married in early January 2020, and their divorce came around six months later.
Reflecting on the split, Morgan shared, „I went through two years of pain,“ highlighting the embarrassment and disappointment of having a broken family.
However, Morgan found growth and perspective in the experience, realizing that life doesn’t always go as planned, but finding blessings in her son and her journey.
Since the divorce, Morgan has been in a relationship with basketball player James Karnik, who has become an important part of her son’s life.
Kopech has since remarried and welcomed a son, Vander, in 2022. Despite this, Morgan is grateful for Karnik’s presence in her son’s life as a father figure.
