In the summer of 2014, I joined a group of journalists on an organized visit to a Border Patrol warehouse in Nogales, Arizona. My daughter had just turned 5 years old the day before. I remember that when I walked out of her door, she gently used her hand to smooth out the wrinkles in her uniform as if to wake her from her sleep. I remember writing her daily notes in „Eu te amo“, our common language, feeling extra guilty for her. Leaving her with her father was always safe and convenient, but never easy.
