Vivek Ramaswamy has run into resistance from Iowa Republicans no matter how much he campaigns in the state because some voters consider him a black Muslim.
Apoorva Ramaswamy asks two supporters of her husband's presidential campaign, „What are people saying'' and „What answers can you provide?'' about why they are not supporting Vivek Ramaswami. I asked a simple question.
„Well, this is all I have, and I couldn't remember who said it, but they mentioned his dark skin and thought he was Muslim.“ , an advocate named Teresa Fowler told her at a meet-and-greet at a restaurant Thursday. . „I made them very clear about it. I don't know if they believe me or if they think I was covering for him, but I don't know.“
Apoorva Ramaswamy listened intently before replying, „There's not much we can do about that.“
The fact that Iowa Republicans believe Vivek Ramaswamy is a black Muslim should be the least surprising development in the 2024 election. This is Donald Trump's party. Republican candidates and elected officials can talk all they want about how their party is not racist, but the actions of many ordinary voters tell a different story.
A big part of Trump's success with white rural America is his embrace of racism. It's the same kind of racism and fear of people who are different that exists in many parts of rural America.
We should oppose Vivek Ramaswami not because of his skin color or his false beliefs about religion, but because of his ideas.
But this is Donald Trump's Republican Party, and in Trump's Republican Party, anyone with dark skin and a last name like Ramaswamy will have to deal with racism and bigotry.
