Shakira is opening up about her past relationship with ex Gerard Piqué and the sacrifices she made to try and keep her family together.
The renowned Colombian singer recently had a conversation with The Times UK, where she reflected on pausing her career for Piqué’s football aspirations.
„For a long time, I paused my career to support Gerard in his football career,“ said Shakira, 47. „There was a lot of sacrifices made for love.“
The „Hips Don’t Lie“ singer and the now-retired Spanish footballer first met in 2010 on the set of her music video for „Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).“
They confirmed their relationship in March 2021 and had their first son in 2013. However, Shakira and Piqué — who have sons Milan, 10, and Sasha, 8 — decided to end their relationship after 11 years in June 2020.
In early 2023, she relocated from Barcelona, Spain, to Miami, Florida, which has positively impacted her career by facilitating collaborations with other artists.
This move has also allowed Shakira to bond with Victoria Beckham, as they share experiences of relationships with football stars. Shakira mentioned, „Empathy is key in an artist’s work. An athlete is in a constant state of war and has to avoid empathy at all costs.“
Shakira spoke with Billboard in September 2023, revealing her career was a lower priority while in Europe, focusing on her family. Now in the U.S., she can release music more efficiently, despite the challenges of being a single mom.
Her sons have been supportive during her career milestones, like the VMAs where she received the Vanguard Award. She expressed her love for her sons in an interview with ET, saying, „They’re everything to me.“
