Protests erupted in the Irish town of Ballinrobe, County Mayo over the weekend over plans to bring 50 male migrants to the small town and house them in JJ Gannon’s Hotel.
On Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of Integration sent a briefing to politicians informing them that from January 8, 50 hotel beds will be made available to men seeking international protection.
At the press conference, it was said that a one-year contract had been presented to the ministry.
At the press conference, it was explained that a government-wide emergency response is currently underway to deal with the influx of asylum seekers into Ireland.
„Given the scale and urgency of the task of procuring accommodation for new arrivals, developments are often rushed and there is a need to act quickly,“ the report said.
The ministry said it was working to improve the way it procures accommodation for people fleeing war and seeking protection, as well as improving the way it communicates with the communities in which they live.
Fine Gael president Michael Burke shared the news on social media that the hotel’s owner had withdrawn its lease following the protests.
I have been speaking with the previous owners of JJ Gannon’s Hotel.
As of this morning, the owner has informed us that the lease agreement for the current offer has been withdrawn.
I am pleased with this announcement. The results were positive for everyone who participated last night and who have been in contact with me over the past 24 hours.
Thank you to everyone who supported us.”
The town united to protest the move on its social media pages. „Balinrobe says no“, Created to garner support.
Live streaming video of the protest showed local business owners addressing the crowd and sharing their concerns that the community was given just two days‘ notice of the impending arrival of migrants.
“Unfortunately, we have to stand here and stay here and not allow this to happen,” she said.
„If that happens, my daughter won’t be walking down this street, and I won’t be walking down this street. These 50 people are probably staying here, right where we are, without documents. If so, where do we go?”
„If we all don’t stay here and stand here and do something about it, they’ll be here Monday morning.“
