At EconLog, we often list and criticize government measures that reduce our freedoms and harm our economy. So I'm happy to report on recent votes in the opposite direction: votes to reduce the government's role in the economy.
Voters in Jackson County, Missouri cast their votes on Tuesday, April 2nd. 58.1%~41.% Opposes the extension of the 3/8 percentage point sales tax that has existed for decades.according to Varad Ligonkar of reasonExtending the sales tax for 40 years would increase revenue by approximately $2 billion over the next 40 years.
The money was supposed to be used to renovate the Kansas City Royals' baseball stadium and build a new stadium for the recent Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
This means that money from people who pay sales taxes will be distributed to significantly wealthier team owners. Of course, these funds may have made ticket prices cheaper than they otherwise would have been. Because without that tax, both teams would have to raise money from those willing to pay, which could mean higher ticket prices. But even then, the money would flow to relatively wealthy people. A high proportion of people who pay current ticket prices are almost certainly relatively wealthy.
Hence the title of this article.A majority of voters opposed redistribution of wealth upward.
