WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
On November 16, 2023, Netflix premiered the first installment of the final season of „The Crown,“ leaving me disappointed. Despite my eagerness to watch, life’s commitments often took precedence, making it challenging to indulge in any content. However, after finally catching up, I found myself wishing I hadn’t bothered.
Featuring Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, and more, the first four episodes are set after Charles and Diana’s divorce, focusing on the events surrounding Diana and Mohamed Al-Fayed.
While Diana’s death was a significant event in British history, the show felt more like a Diana propaganda movie rather than „The Crown.“ Despite the talented cast, the writing was subpar, demanding too much from the actors and resulting in cringeworthy scenes.
The portrayal of Diana’s relationship with Dodi was over the top, with unrealistic drama and manipulative plotlines that detracted from the overall viewing experience. The season took creative liberties that felt unnecessary and shallow, making it difficult to connect with the story.
However, there were a few standout moments, such as Charles breaking the news of Diana’s death to William and Harry or the poignant scene where Harry writes a card for his mother. These moments provided brief glimpses of emotional depth in an otherwise lackluster season.
Despite the flaws, Elizabeth Debicki’s performance as Diana in her last eight weeks of life was outstanding, elevating the season above its weak script. The show’s decline in quality from previous seasons has been noted by critics, with many finding it clumsy and predictable.
As the season progresses towards Charles marrying Camilla and other historical events, my expectations for the second half are low. The upcoming episodes will be available on Netflix on December 14.
