MADRID (Reuters) – Army troops were called in to help around 600 motorists stranded on highways in heavy snow as a fan storm blanketed many parts of Spain, authorities said on Friday.
Snowfall left motorists stranded for hours on National Highway 122 between Soria and Agreda in northern Spain, and authorities said they had sent troops from their base in Zaragoza to help move them.
Miguel Ángel Clavero of the Civil Protection Unit said on Friday that snowfall had made many roads impassable in Spain's eastern Aragon region and Zaragoza airport had been closed.
Temperatures in Soria dropped to -13 degrees Celsius (8.6 degrees Fahrenheit), state weather forecaster AEMET said Friday.
Emmett added that heavy rain fell in western Extremadura and Catalonia in northeastern Spain.
The storm is expected to pass by Saturday, forecasters said.
