Below is French Gates' full statement.
After careful consideration and consideration, I have decided to step down as Co-Chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. My last day of work at the Foundation will be June 7th.
This is not a decision I made lightly. I am extremely proud of the foundation that Bill and I have built together and the extraordinary work we are doing to address inequality around the world. I care deeply about the Foundation team, our partners around the world, and all the people who are touched by the Foundation's work.
I am confident that the Foundation will remain strong, with a highly capable CEO, Mark Suzman, an executive leadership team, and an experienced Board of Trustees, to ensure that all of its important work continues. We are taking this step with confidence that we are in a safe place. The time is right for me to move on to the next chapter of my philanthropy.
This is a critical time for women and girls in the United States and around the world, and those fighting to protect and advance equality need urgent support. Under the terms of my agreement with Bill, when I leave the Foundation, I will receive an additional $12.5 billion to work on behalf of women and families. We'll have more information on what that will look like soon.
