This study uses the GPT-4 model to investigate the effectiveness of an AI-based ethics advisor. Drawn from a pool of ethical dilemmas published in the New York Times column “The Ethicist,” ethical advice provided by human expert and column author Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah and AI-generated I compared the advice given. This comparison measured the perceived usefulness of ethical advice across his three different groups: random subjects recruited from online platforms, Wharton MBA students, and a panel of ethical decision-making experts comprised of academics and clergy. This is done by assessing gender. Our findings reveal that there are no significant differences in the perceived value of advice between human-generated and AI-generated ethical advice. When forced to choose between two sources of advice, random subjects recruited online showed a slight but significant preference for AI-generated advice, giving it a 60% chance of MBA students and expert panel showed no significant preference.
