Google Maps has announced several updates aimed at giving users more control over their personal information. The navigation app will soon allow users to delete activity related to a specific location, allowing users to delete searches, directions, visits, and shares associated with a specific location. This feature is designed to give users more control over their location history.
Additionally, Google Maps is increasing the accessibility of location controls by allowing users to access them directly from the blue dot that represents their location on the map. By clicking the blue dot, users can see if Location History or Timeline settings are enabled and see the app's access to their device's location.
The ability to remove location-related activities and new location control features will be rolled out to both Android and iOS platforms in the coming weeks. Google emphasizes the importance of user controls that allow individuals to manage their location data and delete information if they wish.
Another update to Google Maps says that if users choose to enable Location History, their timelines will soon be saved directly to their devices. This change provides an additional layer of control and access to your location history.
Additionally, Google is adjusting the default settings for automatic deletion controls when a user first turns on Location History. The previous default setting was 18 months; the default setting is now 3 months. Users can still choose to manually delete their information or disable the settings completely.
Google reassures users about its safety, saying that backup data is automatically encrypted to ensure privacy. These updates will be rolled out gradually over the next year on both Android and iOS platforms, and users will receive a notification when the changes are applied to their account.
