The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are Decided to keep wide receiver Mike Evans with the team. It was extended for several more years and an extension agreement was announced on Monday. Now, Baker Mayfield is sitting and waiting for the same call or text message from his agent with the same news that Evans received.that It only makes sense after the duo has been together for a year, it turned out to be far more successful than anyone outside the facility could have imagined. In fact, it would be insane for the Buccaneers not to bring Baker back unless they clearly have a better option.
„This is a good sign for the Bucks offense. If you're not going to sign Baker Mayfield, you don't need to sign Mike Evans.“ – Keyshawn Johnson
It's truly amazing how a single orbit around the sun can make such a difference. This time last year, no one (not even Baker) knew what Mayfield's future held. Last spring, he was coming off a season in which he joined two teams and won just two games, and his stock was probably at an all-time low. He bounced back in 2023, leading Tampa to a district title and making his first Pro Bowl, proving his detractors (including myself) wrong.
So Mayfield earned a new contract from the Bucks, and then some. It won't make a market or break any records, but knowing Evans will be back makes even more sense. Evans' future was up in the air entering the offseason, but with the announcement of a contract extension, the franchise will want to continue the good things in this miserable NFC South.
Tampa really came out of nowhere last season to win the district championship with a 9-8 record. Not many expected them to finish with a winning record, especially after the quarterback acquisition was confirmed. The battle in training camp will be between Mayfield and Kyle Trask.. Some questioned whether Mayfield could beat Trask in camp. Well, he did more than that.
Now is the time to give him his due. That doesn't mean the Bucks should overextend his contract, but he still deserves an extension. Johnson hit the mark on Monday morning's „Undisputed.“ Keeping Evans means Tampa Bay should be inclined to do the same with Mayfield.. With the start of the new league year (March 13) just around the corner, we should know more about Mayfield's future in Tampa and elsewhere soon. However, for other teams, Like regional rival Atlanta.has shown interest, so Bucs brass won't have to wait too long.
Unless the Bucs do something in free agency or on the trade market, Baker's NFL home is expected to be in Tampa Bay for the foreseeable future. According to Pro Football Focus, Mayfield ranks third among the top free agent QBs on the market this offseason, behind Kirk Cousins (once) and Ryan Tannehill. He would be a good option for Tampa if Cousins hasn't recovered from his Achilles injury, but he'll be harder to sell than Mayfield to that fan base right now.
Maybe Tannehill would have been a better option a few years ago, but right now he's probably not someone you'd want to hitchhike onto your wagon. The Bucs could find a QB in the draft, which would be smart anyway, but it's unlikely that a rookie QB would come in and overthrow Mayfield. Twelve months ago that would have sounded crazy, but at this point Baker Mayfield is the best option for the Bucks Have another successful season. Now, we'll just sit back and wait and see if the organization makes the right decision.
