Financial support provided by Commonwealth Games Federation is very low: Malaysia
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has offered Malaysia 100 million pounds ($127.93 million) to help host the Games. Malaysian officials have revealed the proposal and the cabinet is expected to consider the matter soon. However, the proposal provoked mixed reactions due to spending concerns and limited preparation time.
Game downsizing proposal
In response to financial concerns, the Malaysian Olympic Council proposed holding a scaled-down Games. The proposals include reducing the cost of accommodation for athletes and reducing the size of the opening and closing ceremonies, with the aim of easing potential financial burdens.
Minister for Youth and Sports Yeo spoke in Parliament, stressing the need to be cautious in using public funds. He said if Malaysia hosts the event, the expenditure should be aligned with the support provided by the CGF. Mr Yeo reiterated that the final decision rests with Cabinet and stressed the importance of protecting taxpayers' money.
„If we have to spend taxpayers' money, probably the best choice for this government is not to hold the Games,“ Mr Yeo said, stressing a cautious approach pending the cabinet's verdict. , Mr Yeo insisted on taking steps to ensure fiscal transparency. The ministry will appoint a regulatory body to audit the tournament's accounts, with the aim of ensuring accountability and protecting public funds. Malaysia previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998.
