Recruiters are notoriously expensive. a little time According to former Disney recruiter Simon Taylor, a resume only takes 3 to 5 seconds. „Five is generous,“ he previously said. I said, „Please make it.“. There are too many candidates to give more than this.
But it turns out they can be more forgiving when it comes to their LinkedIn profiles. Say, „You spend 25 times more time on your boyfriend's LinkedIn profile than on his resume.“ Lindsay Mustaine, a former Amazon recruiter and current CEO of career coaching company Talent Paradigm. That's because the platform provides a „more comprehensive snapshot of a candidate's professional journey,“ she says. Unlike her resume, it is not limited to 1-2 pages. Whether she's actively searching for candidates or not, she looks at LinkedIn profiles.
And your profile has one thing that makes you that way. stand out The rest is your activity.
„I want to know how you view the problem.“
Below the banner, photo, and title there is a section dedicated to your activity. This is where your posts and public interactions with other people on the site appear. This is on top of a variety of work experiences. And it's this section that will grab the recruiter's attention.
Do not miss it: The ultimate guide to cracking the interview and landing your dream job
Mustaine recommends using this space to show how passionate you are about your field. It could be through posts about things you always do or things you would never do in certain situations at work. It can be what Mustaine calls „mini-soapbox rants,“ posts about things that annoy you about your industry. It could be your response to someone else's post about a new direction the company is taking.
„We're looking for how you perceive problems and solutions happening in your industry,“ Mustaine says. The aim is to demonstrate that you have thought deeply about where your industry is currently and how to move it forward.
It also makes you a „three-dimensional person“ in a way that a resume alone couldn't, she says. “Now you understand what is important to you.”
„It's very easy to be the frontrunner.“
Don't ignore all the other components of your profile.
Make sure your profile is updated to accurately reflect your experience and tailor it to the job you want. Please include a professional photo. Write a summary that reflects who you are as a professional and what you want to achieve.
But make sure to also enhance the activity section of your profile to help you stand out from the crowd. „It's so easy to essentially be a top candidate because there's another side to you,“ she says.
